A Home Away From Home
Pitso's Kitchen was established on the 1 May 2016. It is founded by Mr. Pitso Chauke who hails from Limpopo — Malamulele, which is about 150km outside Polokwane.
Pitso's Kitchen serves food that Mr. Pitso Chauke and a majority of his peers grew up eating. It is your everyday food that as a child and teenager you take for granted until you move to the suburbs. The meals become a rarity and a symbol of nostalgia and home. The business was formed out of passion and to celebrate South African cuisine in Cape Town. The South African traditional-style cuisine was neglected, and food culture focused on Westernized Food especially in the Cosmopolitan community of Cape Town. Mr. Pitso Chauke who at the time was working as a policeman at the Waterfront Police Station, studied the Cape Town food culture through research and learnt that this was a lucrative and niche market to penetrate. The business upon inception was a hobby to earn an extra income. The first day of trading for Pitso's Kitchen was done from the boot of his car in Khayelitsha. This proceeded for three months until Mr. Pitso Chauke approached The Old Biscuit Mill Market in Woodstock. The move from Khayelitsha to Woodstock proved to be very fruitful and a catalyst for the growth and entity that is Pitso's Kitchen to date. Destiny would have it that Mr. Chauke would return to the Waterfront 4 years later, not as law enforcement personnel but this time as an African Cuisine Restaurant Owner and Youth Employment Creator. Pitso's kitchen went from serving the best African Cuisine in Cape Town to be the most recognized South African Brand that celebrates South African Cuisine. Pitso Chauke traded his bullet-proof vest for an apron and focused on providing a product that gave his customers a feeling of "home away from home". He gave his customers an opportunity to trade wine and oysters for mogudu (tripe) and umqhomboti (African Traditional Beer) without having to downgrade the space they choose to enjoy these delicacies in. Pitso's kitchen still trades at the Old Biscuit Mill every Saturday and Sunday. A sit in restaurant at Makers Landing, V&A Waterfront has since been open since 2020 and operates Tuesday to Sunday. Pitso's Kitchen has since collaborated & been endorsed by multiple reputable South African Food Brands. Pitso's Kitchen currently employs approximately 20 individual's majority being youth between Old Biscuit Mill & Pitso's Kitchen Restaurant. Pitso's kitchen also does private catering at weddings and business functions. ..
